Since our program is a local school program, our application is only open to students that are districted for Wheeler or have been accepted through the county school-choice program (https://www.cobbk12.org/page/8755/school-choice-transfers).

• Must be districted for Wheeler (you can check for eligibility using this Bus Route Finder)
• All quarter 8th grade grades in Science, Math, and English** (more specific details about grades for each Major are located in our curriculum brochure)
• Rigorous classes taken in middle school such as Accelerated Math 8 or higher and/or Accelerated Science 8 or higher
• Active participation in a Fine Arts course such as MS-HS Visual Arts (VA) Comprehensive, Band, Chorus, and/or Orchestra
• Standardized or Nationally Normed test scores, such as PSAT 8/9, ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills), CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test), CTP (Comprehensive Testing Program) by ERB, etc.
• Short Essay (at least 3 paragraphs) about why you want to join our STEAM Academy and why you are wanting to be chosen for your specific Major (see our curriculum brochure for more information about Majors)
• One 8th Grade Teacher Recommendation (preferably in the Major you are wanting to apply for) – Link for teachers: Will be available on December 9, 2024 (need by Tuesday, February 11, 2025)

The information below is for students that missed last year’s deadline to enter our STEAM Academy program as a Freshmen and wish to apply for an available spot next year for their Sophomore year.

There are very limited spots available to fill our C/O 2027 cohort to capacity.

The Wheeler STEAM Academy has a competitive admissions process. All applicants will be evaluated using the following:

• Must be districted for Wheeler (you can check for eligibility using this Bus Route Finder)
• Must have earned at least a weighted GPA of 3.125 for the Fall 2024 semester
  • *GPA is calculated as an A – 4.0, B – 3.0, C – 2.0, D – 1.0, F – 0.0 for each individual class
    *Weighted GPA gives an additional 0.5 quality point for Honors classes and an additional 1.0 quality point for AP classes
• Must earn at least a weighted GPA of 3.125 for the Spring 2025 semester**
• Must have taken and made at least a B in Honors 9th Literature, in at least Algebra I or higher for math (no Foundations of Algebra), and in the Freshmen required class for the specific Major you are applying to (see our curriculum brochure for more information about Majors — note: Potential Engineering majors only need to have taken Foundations of Engineering OR Introduction to Drafting vs. both) and potential Technology majors only need to have taken Introduction to Software Technology but must have earned at least a 90%**
• No discipline referrals**
• Short Essay (at least 3 paragraphs) about why you want to join our STEAM Academy and why you are wanting to be chosen for your specific Major (see our curriculum brochure for more information about Majors)
• Teacher recommendation from the Freshmen required class for the specific Major you are applying to – Link for teachers: Will be available on December 9, 2024 (need by Tuesday, February 11, 2025)
