Starting in the 2026-2027 school year for rising 9th graders, the former Wheeler STEAM Academy program is shifting to a new, student-led/self-monitoring opportunity called the Wheeler STEAM Academic Scholars (no application necessary!). With this new model, ANY non-Magnet students can achieve recognition for mastering the areas of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Fine Arts, and Math) and utilizing the AP Capstone courses (description below) while also being given flexibility in their schedule to meet these requirements on their own timeframe. This recognition also gives importance to balancing rigorous coursework with creative outlets and enrichment activities outside of the classroom!

Perfect for: Students who want a well-rounded transcript and resume that demonstrate excellence in both technical and creative STEAM fields inside and outside of the classroom.

STEAM Academy Scholars Checklist/Requirements

Rather than teaching subject-specific content, the AP Capstone courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting.

AP Seminar (11th grade) – This foundational course lets students explore the complexities of academic and real-world issues. Students learn to investigate complex issues, analyze diverse perspectives, and build evidence-based arguments.

AP Research (12th grade) – This course builds on the skills from AP Seminar by guiding students through an independent, yearlong investigation of a topic of their choice. Students learn to design a research question, gather and analyze information, and present their findings in a scholarly paper and oral defense.
